Relationship To Strategic Plan:

Goal 2: Responsive City Government

Goal 3: Invested in Today and Tomorrow

Goal 4: Desirable Place to Live, Work and Play

Goal 6: Collaborative Engagement

Executive Summary:

The National Civic League hosts an annual award application process to provide designation for municipalities national as an All-America City. Fayetteville has previously applied for and received the award in 1985, 2001 and 2011. The City is submitting an award application package for the 2023 cycle, application narrative is attached.

Background:

The National Civic League invites you to apply for the All-America City Award, the nation’s most prestigious community award, now in its 74th year. This award offers the opportunity for both recognition and reflection. Applications require communities to come together to assess their strengths and challenges. The process of applying for the award provides an opportunity to mobilize local groups to work together and display on a national stage the people and projects that make your community a great place to live, work and play. The 2023 All-America City Awards will recognize ten communities that are working to improve the lives of young people, with particular attention to efforts that engage young people in this work.

Issues/Analysis:

The City’s 2023 application meets this year’s award criteria by focusing on the theme of youth participation and engagement. In addition to describing the City’s story and strength of civic capital, Fayetteville provided three primary activity areas that demonstrate our commitment to the All-America City Award guidelines.

The activities included in the application package include the Market House Repurposing Project, Youth Boards and Commissions; and Youth Empowerment, Mentoring and Education Programs.

Application materials are due on February 22, 2023 (extended from the original February 15 deadline.

During March 2023, finalists will be announced.

If selected as a finalist, the City would prepare the competition presentation between March-June 2023. The competition will include a cross-sector delegation to attend the awards ceremony in Denver and deliver a presentation.

The Awards ceremony will be held in Denver June 9-11, 2023 where finalists will present to a national jury of civic, local, government, business, philanthropy and community experts.

Budget Impact:

Travel and presentation funding would be required for the Awards Competition in June should Fayetteville be named as a finalist.
