Relationship To Strategic Plan:

Goal 1: Safe and Secure Community

Executive Summary:

Council is asked to adopt Budget Ordinance Amendment 2024-10 to appropriate $5,000 of the 2023 Motiva First Responder Grant. It will be used for first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and collapsible cones to improve the safety of officers and the community during emergency situations.

Background:

The Fayetteville Police Department is required by OSHA regulations to provide each police vehicle with one (1) 10BC fire extinguisher, 1 first aid kit and 1 set of traffic cones. Police officers are called to the scene of all types of emergencies. Departmental policy and procedures require police vehicles to be equipped with fire extinguishers and first aid kits to assist officers in administering first aid and protecting the public and property. In their daily work, officers are often required to handle incidents involving injuries caused by vehicle accidents, assault with deadly weapons, and caustic events.

Officers will be required to apply first aid for a long period while waiting for paramedic medical personnel. Occasions may arise in which police officers must have the tools necessary to assist them in performing their duties and fulfilling their obligations to the citizens of the community and to safeguard the officers. First aid kits, fire extinguishers and traffic cones are recognized as prominent safety equipment, utilized to safeguard the officers and the public during critical emergency circumstances.
