Relationship To Strategic Plan:

Goal 1: Safe and Secure Community

Goal 4: Desirable Place to Live, Work and Recreate

Executive Summary:

The City of Fayetteville has invited Dr. Gerard Tate from the North Carolina Office of Violence Prevention to facilitate a Council discussion on the strategic direction for the Office of Community Safety.

Dr. Tate will provide an overview of his office’s objectives, goals and support offered to the City and lead the Council’s discussion on OCS priorities.

Background:

During the adoption of the City’s FY24 budget, Council appropriated funds for the establishment of an Office of Community Safety and hiring of a director. During this same time, Governor Roy Cooper established the North Carolina Office of Violence Prevention housed in the NC Department of Public Safety and hired Dr. Gerard Tate as Director.

This past fall, City staff engaged Dr. Tate to determine how the new office can best support the City’s interests in creating the new OCS through training and technical assistance support.

Issues/Analysis:

City Council will provide thoughts and conceptual discussion regarding the Office of Community Safety to support staff in establishing clear priorities, goals and objectives concurrent to the search for a Director and development of the OCS programs and operations. Council’s discussion will provide clarity in expectations and vision.
