Executive Summary:
NCDOT is requesting the City’s concurrence for their recommendation to reduce the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on Morganton Road from Cliffdale Road to McPherson Church Road. The recommendation for a speed limit reduction resulted from NCDOT’s investigation of a request from the City to review this section of Morganton Road. In order to the complete this change, one municipal speed limit certificate will need to be repealed for the 45 mph speed limit. Once repealed, the speed limit will be 35 mph based on the NC statute that says municipal speed limits are 35 mph unless otherwise posted. NCDOT will post the 35 mph speed limit signs.
Background:
The existing speed limit on Morganton Road between Cliffdale Road and McPherson Church Road is 45 mph.
Issues/Analysis:
NCDOT is requesting the City’s concurrence for the reduction in the speed limit on Morganton Road between Cliffdale Road and McPherson Church Road.
Budget Impact:
There will be no impact to the budget for the proposed speed limit reduction.
Options:
• Approve the municipal speed limit certificate
• Reject the municipal speed limit certificate and request additional information
Recommended Action:
Staff recommends Council move to approve the municipal speed limit certificate.
