Goal IV: Desirable Place to Live, Work and Recreate

Executive Summary:

City Council is asked to accept the resolution that requests funding to pursue the establishment of the Black Voice and History Museum and to approve the contract with the Community Development Foundation in the amount $450,000 to pay for expenses associated with the study, community engagement, and preliminary conceptual design of an African American Museum.

Background:

The concept for the African American Museum was presented to City Council at their May 2, 2022 work session and sent to the September 12, 2022 regular meeting for consideration.  At the regular meeting the Council approved setting aside the sum of $450,000 for the initial data gathering, public engagement, and concept development for the proposed African American History Museum, to be located in Downtown Fayetteville.

A similar request was made to the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.  The Commissioners approved setting aside an additional $450,000 for the initial data gathering, public engagement, and concept development for the proposed African American History Museum at their April, 18 2022 regular meeting.
